WHAT IS AUTOMATIC DRAWING?
Automatic drawing (distinguished from drawn expression of mediums) is an artistic technique developed by surrealists in which the hand can move randomly across the paper. In applying chance and accident to mark-making, drawing is largely freed of rational control. Hence the drawing produced may be attributed in part to the subconscious and may reveal something of the psyche, which would otherwise be repressed source.
WHERE DO I START
It all begins with a feeling, what are you feeling at this moment? Try to find an emotion, feeling, or state of being and get in tune with it. if that doesn’t work a great place to start is just putting ANY mark on the paper in front of you.
STEP ONE
put any mark on the paper, recall back to the last section if there are any questions. Your mark can be anything you want it to be.
STEP TWO
Add another mark onto your previous mark, or mark a completely new part of your paper.
STEP THREE
keep adding onto the marks you’ve created with more marks. The more you add on the more it becomes an “object”.Contrast within the marks can create interesting patterns as well.
STEP FOUR
keep addinG onto your marks, try a different pen or add color, the more marks you add, the more your drawing will take shape. don’t be afraid to experiment.
